HIPPO PAY TERMS & CONDITIONS
1. INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Hippo Pay.
These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Hippo Pay website, application, digital wallet, payment services, bill payment services, gift card services and other services provided through the Hippo Pay platform.
By creating an account, accessing or using Hippo Pay, you agree to be legally bound by these Terms, our Privacy Policy, and any additional terms applicable to specific services.
If you do not agree with these Terms, you should not create an account or use Hippo Pay.
2. ABOUT HIPPO PAY
Hippo Pay is a digital payment platform that provides users with access to various digital and payment-related services.
Depending on availability, Hippo Pay services may include:
- Airtime
- Mobile data
- Electricity payments
- Cable TV subscriptions
- SMS services
- HIPPO Gift Cards
- Digital wallet services
- Other services that may be introduced from time to time
Some services may be provided through or fulfilled by third-party providers.
3. ELIGIBILITY
To use Hippo Pay, you must:
- Provide accurate and complete information during registration.
- Be legally capable of entering into a binding agreement.
- Provide a valid telephone number and email address where required.
- Complete identity or KYC verification when requested.
- Comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Maintain the security of your account credentials.
We may refuse registration or restrict an account where we reasonably believe that the requirements for using our services have not been satisfied.
4. ACCOUNT REGISTRATION
You may be required to create an account before accessing certain Hippo Pay services.
You agree that all information supplied during registration is accurate, current and complete.
You must promptly update information that becomes inaccurate or outdated.
You must not:
- Create an account using another person’s identity.
- Provide false information.
- Create accounts for fraudulent purposes.
- Create multiple accounts to bypass restrictions.
- Allow another person to use your account where prohibited by Hippo Pay.
Hippo Pay may require additional verification before allowing certain account activities.
5. ACCOUNT SECURITY
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of:
- Your password
- Transaction PIN
- OTPs
- Login credentials
- Recovery credentials
- Other security information associated with your account
You must not share your password, transaction PIN, or OTP with anyone.
If you suspect that your account has been compromised, you must notify Hippo Pay immediately.
Hippo Pay will not be responsible for losses resulting from your failure to protect your account credentials, except where such responsibility cannot lawfully be excluded.
6. TRANSACTION PIN
Hippo Pay may require users to create a transaction PIN.
The transaction PIN may be required before completing certain transactions or account activities.
You must keep your transaction PIN confidential.
Hippo Pay may temporarily restrict transactions where:
- An incorrect PIN is repeatedly entered.
- Suspicious activity is detected.
- Fraud is suspected.
- The account appears compromised.
- Additional verification is required.
7. OTP VERIFICATION
Hippo Pay may use one-time passwords (“OTPs”) to verify:
- Telephone numbers
- Email addresses
- Account access
- Sensitive account changes
- Certain transactions
- Security-related actions
An OTP may expire after a specified period.
You must not disclose an OTP to another person.
Hippo Pay will not be responsible for unauthorised activity resulting from an OTP being voluntarily disclosed to another person.
8. WALLET SERVICES
Where available, Hippo Pay may provide users with a digital wallet.
The wallet may allow you to fund and use available wallet funds to purchase eligible Hippo Pay services.
Your wallet balance represents funds recorded by Hippo Pay as available for use through the platform.
You must not attempt to:
- Manipulate your wallet balance.
- Exploit technical errors.
- Circumvent transaction limits.
- Use fraudulent payment methods.
- Reverse legitimate transactions through fraudulent means.
Hippo Pay may suspend transactions involving suspected fraud, unauthorised activity or technical errors while an investigation is conducted.
9. FUNDING YOUR WALLET
Where wallet funding is available, users may fund their wallet through payment methods supported by Hippo Pay.
Funding transactions may be subject to:
- Payment processor charges
- Transaction limits
- Verification requirements
- Security checks
- Processing delays
- Third-party payment provider rules
A successful payment through a third-party payment processor does not necessarily mean that the wallet has been successfully credited until Hippo Pay receives confirmation of the transaction.
Where a payment is debited from your bank or payment method but your Hippo Pay wallet is not credited, you should contact Hippo Pay support with the relevant transaction details.
10. BILL PAYMENT SERVICES
Hippo Pay may allow users to purchase or pay for services including:
Airtime
Users may purchase airtime for supported telecommunications networks.
Data
Users may purchase supported mobile data plans.
Electricity
Users may purchase electricity tokens or other electricity-related services for supported electricity distribution providers.
Cable TV
Users may pay for supported cable television subscriptions.
SMS Services
Users may purchase SMS services or related communication services made available through Hippo Pay.
Service availability may vary by provider, location, and technical availability.
11. THIRD-PARTY SERVICE PROVIDERS
Some Hippo Pay services are fulfilled through third-party providers.
These may include:
- Banks
- Payment processors
- Telecommunications providers
- Electricity providers
- Cable TV providers
- SMS providers
- Identity verification providers
- Technology providers
- Other service providers
Hippo Pay is not responsible for outages, delays, errors, failures, or service interruptions caused solely by a third-party provider.
However, Hippo Pay will make reasonable efforts to assist users where a transaction involving a third-party provider requires investigation.
12. TRANSACTION CONFIRMATION
You are responsible for reviewing transaction details before confirming a transaction.
Depending on the service, transaction details may include:
- Service type
- Amount
- Telephone number
- Meter number
- Smartcard or decoder number
- Beneficiary information
- Other service-specific information
Once a transaction has been successfully processed, it may not be possible to cancel or reverse it.
Users are responsible for ensuring that information entered before completing a transaction is correct.
13. FAILED, PENDING AND REVERSED TRANSACTIONS
A transaction may be classified as:
- Successful
- Pending
- Failed
- Reversed
- Cancelled
A pending transaction may require additional time for confirmation from Hippo Pay or a third-party provider.
Where a transaction fails and funds have been deducted, Hippo Pay may initiate or process a reversal where applicable.
Reversals may depend on the relevant payment provider and transaction circumstances.
14. REFUNDS
Refund eligibility depends on the type of transaction and the circumstances surrounding the transaction.
Where a refund is approved, Hippo Pay may return eligible funds to the original funding method, wallet or another approved destination.
Some digital services may be non-refundable once successfully delivered.
Examples may include successfully delivered:
- Airtime
- Data
- Electricity tokens
- Cable TV subscriptions
- SMS credits
- Gift cards
Users should contact Hippo Pay as soon as possible if they believe a transaction was processed incorrectly.
15. HIPPO GIFT CARDS
Where available, Hippo Pay may allow users to create digital HIPPO Gift Cards using eligible funds from their wallet.
A gift card may contain:
- A monetary value
- A unique redeemable code
- A transaction/reference number
- An expiry date where applicable
- Other security information
Gift card functionality may include:
- Create Gift Card
- My Gift Cards
- Redeem Gift Card
- Cancel Gift Card
Gift cards are subject to the specific rules displayed at the time of creation.
16. GIFT CARD CODES
A gift card redemption code is confidential.
You are responsible for protecting the code from unauthorised use.
If another person obtains and successfully redeems a valid gift card code before you report the issue, Hippo Pay may not be able to recover the redeemed value.
You must not:
- Sell fraudulent gift card codes.
- Attempt to guess or manipulate gift card codes.
- Duplicate gift cards.
- Alter gift card information.
- Use gift cards obtained through fraud.
- Attempt to redeem the same gift card multiple times.
17. GIFT CARD CANCELLATION
Where the cancellation feature is available, a user may request cancellation of an eligible gift card subject to the conditions displayed by Hippo Pay.
A gift card that has already been redeemed may not be eligible for cancellation.
Hippo Pay may restrict cancellation where fraud, abuse, or suspicious activity is suspected.
18. FEES AND CHARGES
Hippo Pay may charge fees for certain services.
Applicable fees may be displayed before a transaction is completed.
Fees may include:
- Service charges
- Processing charges
- Payment processing fees
- SMS charges
- Gift card-related charges
- Other applicable transaction fees
Hippo Pay may change its fees from time to time.
Where appropriate, the applicable fee will be displayed before you confirm the relevant transaction.
19. TRANSACTION LIMITS
Hippo Pay may impose limits on:
- Wallet funding
- Transactions
- Gift card creation
- Gift card redemption
- Account activity
- Daily or monthly usage
- Other services
Limits may be imposed for operational, security, fraud-prevention, regulatory, or risk-management purposes.
Additional verification may be required before certain limits can be increased.
20. KYC AND IDENTITY VERIFICATION
Hippo Pay may require users to complete Know Your Customer (“KYC”) procedures.
KYC may include verification using:
- BVN
- NIN
- Government-issued identification
- Telephone number
- Bank account information
- Other identity information
Hippo Pay may restrict certain services until required verification has been completed.
Providing false, misleading, stolen or fraudulent identification information may result in account suspension or termination and may be reported to appropriate authorities where required.
21. ACCOUNT RESTRICTIONS
Hippo Pay may restrict, suspend or temporarily freeze an account where reasonably necessary to:
- Prevent fraud.
- Investigate suspicious activity.
- Protect the account owner.
- Protect other users.
- Comply with applicable law.
- Comply with lawful instructions from competent authorities.
- Investigate disputed transactions.
- Verify account information.
- Prevent misuse of the platform.
- Protect Hippo Pay’s systems.
Where legally permitted, Hippo Pay may provide the user with information regarding the reason for a restriction.
22. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES
You must not use Hippo Pay for:
- Fraud
- Money laundering
- Terrorist financing
- Theft
- Identity theft
- Impersonation
- Unauthorised transactions
- Scam activities
- Phishing
- Cybercrime
- Financing illegal activities
- Circumventing transaction limits
- Exploiting system vulnerabilities
- Manipulating transactions
- Using stolen payment information
- Creating fraudulent accounts
- Creating or distributing fraudulent gift cards
- Any activity prohibited by Nigerian law or applicable law
We may suspend or terminate accounts involved in prohibited activities.
23. FRAUD AND SECURITY INVESTIGATIONS
Hippo Pay may investigate transactions or accounts where suspicious activity is detected.
During an investigation, Hippo Pay may:
- Restrict transactions.
- Temporarily suspend an account.
- Request additional information.
- Request identity verification.
- Review transaction history.
- Contact relevant payment or service providers.
- Report suspected unlawful activity to appropriate authorities where required.
We may not disclose certain information about security investigations where doing so could compromise an investigation or violate applicable law.
24. USER RESPONSIBILITIES
You agree to:
- Provide accurate information.
- Keep your account secure.
- Keep your password and PIN confidential.
- Review transaction details before confirmation.
- Use Hippo Pay only for lawful purposes.
- Notify Hippo Pay of suspicious activity.
- Comply with applicable laws.
- Use services only as intended.
- Maintain access to the telephone number and email address associated with your account.
25. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
All intellectual property associated with Hippo Pay, including where applicable:
- Logos
- Branding
- Website design
- Application design
- Software
- Graphics
- Text
- Content
- Trademarks
- Service names
- User interface elements
belong to Hippo Pay or its respective licensors unless otherwise stated.
You may not copy, reproduce, modify, distribute, reverse engineer, or commercially exploit Hippo Pay’s intellectual property without prior written permission, except where permitted by law.
26. PLATFORM AVAILABILITY
We aim to keep Hippo Pay available and reliable.
However, we do not guarantee that the platform will always be:
- Available
- Uninterrupted
- Error-free
- Free from delays
- Free from technical problems
The platform may occasionally be unavailable because of:
- Maintenance
- Software updates
- Network failures
- Internet outages
- Banking system failures
- Third-party provider failures
- Security incidents
- Force majeure events
- Other circumstances beyond our reasonable control
27. SERVICE CHANGES
Hippo Pay may modify, introduce, suspend or discontinue services from time to time.
Where appropriate, we may provide users with reasonable notice of material changes.
Some services may be removed or modified because of regulatory requirements, third-party provider changes, technical limitations or business considerations.
28. DISCLAIMER
Hippo Pay provides its services on an “as available” basis.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Hippo Pay does not guarantee that:
- Every service will always be available.
- Every transaction will be processed immediately.
- Third-party services will always operate without interruption.
- The platform will always be free from technical errors.
- Transactions will never be delayed.
Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable law.
29. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Hippo Pay will not be responsible for losses arising directly from:
- Incorrect information entered by a user.
- Failure to protect account credentials.
- Disclosure of a password, PIN or OTP.
- Third-party network failures.
- Telecommunications outages.
- Banking or payment processor failures.
- Electricity or cable provider failures.
- Events beyond Hippo Pay’s reasonable control.
- Unauthorised use resulting from the user’s negligence.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability where such limitation or exclusion is prohibited by law.
30. INDEMNIFICATION
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold Hippo Pay, its officers, employees, agents and service providers harmless from claims, losses, liabilities, damages and expenses arising from:
- Your breach of these Terms.
- Your unlawful use of Hippo Pay.
- Fraudulent activity conducted through your account.
- Your violation of applicable laws.
- Your infringement of another person’s rights.
- Your misuse of the platform.
31. PRIVACY
Your use of Hippo Pay is also governed by our Privacy Policy.
Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, protect and share your personal information.
By using Hippo Pay, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the Privacy Policy.
32. ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS
You agree that Hippo Pay may communicate with you electronically.
Electronic communications may include:
- Emails
- SMS
- In-app notifications
- Transaction notifications
- Security alerts
- Account notifications
- Service announcements
Electronic communications may satisfy legal requirements where applicable.

34. ACCOUNT CLOSURE
You may request closure of your Hippo Pay account.
Before closing your account, you should ensure that:
- Pending transactions have been resolved.
- Eligible wallet funds have been dealt with appropriately.
- Outstanding disputes have been addressed.
- Gift cards or other services have been handled appropriately.
Hippo Pay may retain certain information after account closure where required for legal, regulatory, security, accounting, fraud-prevention or dispute-resolution purposes.
35. TERMINATION BY HIPPO PAY
Hippo Pay may suspend or terminate your access where:
- You breach these Terms.
- You provide false information.
- Fraud is suspected.
- Illegal activity is suspected.
- Your account presents a security risk.
- You misuse the platform.
- Required KYC information is not provided.
- We are required to do so by law or a competent authority.
- Continuing to provide the service would create an unacceptable legal, security or operational risk.
Where appropriate and legally permitted, we may provide notice of termination.
36. CHANGES TO THESE TERMS
Hippo Pay may update these Terms from time to time.
Changes may be made because of:
- New services
- Changes to existing services
- Legal or regulatory requirements
- Security improvements
- Business changes
- Technical changes
The updated Terms will be published on the Hippo Pay website or application.
The “Last Updated” date at the beginning of these Terms will indicate when the Terms were most recently revised.
Your continued use of Hippo Pay after an updated version becomes effective may constitute acceptance of the updated Terms where permitted by law.
37. GOVERNING LAW
These Terms shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, subject to any mandatory legal requirements that may apply.
38. DISPUTE RESOLUTION
If you have a dispute with Hippo Pay, you should first contact our customer support team so that we can attempt to resolve the matter informally.
Where a dispute cannot be resolved through customer support, the parties may pursue any applicable dispute-resolution process or legal remedy available under Nigerian law.
Nothing in this section prevents a user from exercising any statutory rights or making a complaint to a competent regulatory authority.
39. SEVERABILITY
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, that provision shall be interpreted or modified to the extent necessary to make it enforceable where legally possible.
The remaining provisions will continue to apply.
40. NO WAIVER
Failure by Hippo Pay to enforce any provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of our right to enforce that provision later.
41. ENTIRE AGREEMENT
These Terms, together with the Hippo Pay Privacy Policy and any additional terms applicable to specific services, constitute the agreement governing your use of Hippo Pay, except where additional contractual terms expressly apply.
